More Control Over Line Spacing & Paragraph Breaks in the Editor on Mobile
Adam McMillan
The current Reflect editor on iOS and desktop treats every
Return
as a full paragraph break with built-in vertical padding. This makes simple writing feel visually “double-spaced,” especially for:- poetry and lyric drafting
- compact journaling
- dense technical notes
- quick note-taking where vertical economy matters
Users who prefer tight, minimal spacing have no way to change this behavior or view notes in a compact mode.
This impacts both readability and workflow:
- Notes take up unnecessary vertical space, requiring more scrolling
- Formatting requires manual cleanup or custom AI prompts
- Writing that depends on line rhythm (poems, songs, quotes) becomes visually awkward
- Users migrating from other apps (Apple Notes, Notion, Obsidian, Bear) expect finer control over spacing
For many users, line density is a core part of how they think and draft.
Two lightweight additions would solve the entire class of issues:
Editor Setting: “Compact Spacing Mode”
- Shift the default paragraph spacing to something much tighter
- Apply consistently to both iOS and desktop
Soft Line Break Shortcut (and visible option in iOS)
- Add a UI-accessible soft break (Shift+Returnequivalent)
- Make it reliably preserved across devices and imports
Reflect’s strength is clarity and focus. Tighter control over line spacing reinforces that aesthetic and makes the writing experience feel more deliberate, especially for long-term users moving their entire knowledge base into the product.
This would remove a major friction point for writers, PMs, researchers, and anyone drafting structured notes or creative work.
